Autumn's Hello...(SIGH from the bus)

The big yellow bus rumbled down our street this morning at 7:00 a.m. Lots of sad faces looked out the window!!! I didn't ride a school bus in the 60's, but I do remember the dread of the first day of a new school year. Summer was over. Gone were the lazy days of bike riding which I so loved. Now homework would dominate the evenings. We were lucky though because we didn't go back to school until the day after Labor Day. Now, here in the South school is over the last week of May. The bells ring again the second week of August. That's a little short of three months of bliss from the good old days. Some things should never change...like school closing on June 1 and school starting the day after Labor Day! No matter when the bus makes its first house call, it's Autumn's hello!

Last Night's Worries!

Twas the night before school started,
When all through the town,
The parents were cheering.
It was a riotous sound!
By eight, kids were washed
And tucked into bed...
When memories of homework...filled them with dread!

New pencils, new folders, new notebooks, too!
New teachers, new friends...their anxiety grew!
The parents just giggled when they learned of this fright
And shouted upstairs-...
GO TO BED-IT'S A SCHOOL NIGHT!

It seems "out of synch" for kids to go back to school in August. It's too hot for one! Cute poem.
