Fan-cy These!

Sitting here blogging in the early hours, I can hear the rain drizzling on the window pane. Finally, some showers to refresh the flowers. Now, I don't know what the rain has to do with decorative fans, but for some reason while enjoying its comforting sound, my mind wandered back to those cute oriental fans that I bought at the five and dime to decorate my room as a teen! I did a bit of research and found many beautifully designed hand fans. The flapper fan in this pic is a favorite because I love the Roaring 20's. Then the painted flower fan is almost identical to the ones that hung on each side of my dresser many, many years ago. They gave me the feeling of being a sophisticated globe trotter! The cost for that simple travel ticket was certainly right. I think maybe 39 cents! The picture on the church fan of the precious little girl praying steals my heart. She reminds me of the first fans that I held as a young child in the late 50's and early 60's on Sunday morning in our little town church. It was long before air-conditioning. Everyone had a fan that they used sparingly throughout the service. Sometimes I could hold my own. But, if I got a little "wild" with the waving, Mom would take over. Hand fans are such a part of history. They even have a language of their own. In Victorian times when ladies wanted to send a message to a suitor, she would hold the fan in a certain way. Do any of you collect fans? (Photos from Flickr)

Your fans are gorgeous! I love fans! I've only a couple but they are so romantic and beautiful! Have you read "Snowflower and the Secret Fan" by Lisa See? It is one of my favorite novels and the story has much to do with friendships of women and their secret writings on their fans! An awesome read!
