Violets for My Mother

Children and mothers never truly part -
Bound in the beating of each other's heart.
-- Charlotte Gray

I never pass by an African Violet that I don't have thoughts of Mom and her love for that flower. As far back in childhood as I can remember, she always had at least one sitting in the kitchen window. Mom sure knew how to tend to them. When other ladies would come to visit, she would beam with pride as they would ooh...and aah...over her treasures. Purple violets were Mom's favorites, but she would sometimes add a white or pink one for variety. I have tried to carry on the tradition, but I just don't quite have the knack for making the leaves so velvety and the flowers so prolific. Mom, you always had the green thumb. You could "root" the finest rose, and you grew the most perfect violets. I know that your and Dad's place in Heaven is decorated with your flowers...especially the violet. I shall go shopping today for the perfect one to bring home and sit in my kitchen window. Here's sending a special request, Mom...Please send a bit of your gardening magic down! Happy Mother's Day, Mama!

My mother, too, had many beautiful African Violets! She had a green thumb and could make anything and everything grow. I think it really was all about the love she gave to everyone and everything. Thanks for the lovely reminder of your mother and mine!
